  • Democrat Chat • "Conservative Oklahoma Values"? Nope.
Our current Republican Congressmen are airing ads daily about how they support "Conservative Oklahoma Values" in some form or other.

    What nonsense!

To a man, they ALL voted against the New G.I. Bill, saying it is "too generous".

They ALL voted against increased funding for the VA.

They ALL voted against increased treatment for PTSD, at a time when we have 300,000 Vets suffering from PTSD.

They ALL voted, multiple times, for the Ryan Budget plan which would cut Social Security benefits, extend the age at which seniors could draw benefits, and privatize Social Security, which would kill it dead in just a few years.

The Ryan plan also gives big tax cuts to millionaires, and in doing so adds a trillion dollars to the national debt.

It also would change Medicare to VoucherCare, where seniors get a voucher to buy private health insurance, and do away with Medicare altogether for seniors who are now under age 55

Sorry, those are NOT "Conservative Oklahoma Values".

BTW: All Republican Congressmen in all states voted as a bloc the same way on every one of those issues.

All but three Republican Senators did, too.

Congressional Research Service Report On Tax Cuts For Wealthy Suppressed By GOP
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/0 … 59156.html

The New York Times reported on Thursday that Senate Republicans applied pressure to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) in September, successfully persuading it to withdraw a report finding that lowering marginal tax rates for the wealthiest Americans had no effect on economic growth or job creation.

"The pressure applied to the research service comes amid a broader Republican effort to raise questions about research and statistics that were once trusted as nonpartisan and apolitical," the Times reported. Democrats in Congress, however, have resurfaced the report and published it in full. It can be read below.

Republicans told the Times they had issues with the tone, wording and scope of the report, but they clearly objected most strongly to its findings, which undermine the governing fiscal philosophy of the party, that tax cuts for the wealthy will spur growth and benefit everybody.

There’s No Contingency Plan If Disaster Strikes On Election Day
    http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics … ection-day

Suppose Sandy had struck a week later. With power out across multiple states, how would people be able to vote on Election Day?

"If this were happening next week, we have no provisions for dealing with this in law," says Thad Hall, a political scientist at the University of Utah.

Many states have contingency plans for conducting elections in the wake of a natural disaster or terrorist attack. But they tend to focus on strictly local effects — moving polling places over to a neighboring precinct, for example.

There’s no controlling authority when it comes to rescheduling presidential voting when roads are blocked and power is down in several states at once, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Nasty campaign tactics: Phony voting instructions
    http://news.yahoo.com/nasty-campaign-ta … ction.html

With a week to go until Election Day, the nasty campaign tactics are coming out.

People in Florida, Virginia and Indiana have gotten calls falsely telling them they can vote early by phone and don’t need to go to a polling place. In suburban Broward County, Fla., a handful of elderly voters who requested absentee ballots say they were visited by unknown people claiming to be authorized to collect the ballots.

And there’s a mysterious DVD popping up in mailboxes that purports to be a documentary raising questions about the true identity of President Barack Obama’s father.

It’s one more indication of just how close this presidential election is. Voting rights advocates say reports of political deception and underhandedness are on the rise.

"Unfortunately it seems like the shadowy individuals that want to prevent people from voting are doing things earlier," said Eric Marshall, legal mobilization manager at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The organization is part of a coalition called Election Protection that is monitoring voting access and rights nationwide, including a toll-free hotline set up to take complaints.

Presidential election still on for Nov. 6 no matter Hurricane Sandy aftermath
    http://www.kjrh.com/dpp/news/political/ … -aftermath

Constitutional scholars and legal experts agree that — come hell or high water– Americans will cast ballots in next week’s presidential election since only the adjourned Congress has authority to alter the timing of Election Day.

But political experts are less certain what will be the impact from the rising waters of Hurricane Sandy, a superstorm slamming into mostly Democratic states in the Northeast region this week. The only battleground states in the storm’s path are Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, with a reduced possibility of impact in the politically critical state of Ohio.

All other states in Sandy’s crosshairs are reliably blue.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney aboard Air Force One deferred Monday when reporters asked if President Barack Obama had the legal authority to delay the elections because of a natural disaster like Sandy.

"I don’t know the answer to that question. I think you’re getting way ahead of yourself here," Carney said.

But legal experts are more certain.

"Congress, under the Constitution, has acted and has chosen that the first Tuesday after the first Monday (in November) shall be set for presidential elections," said Mark Garber, associate dean for legal research at the University of Maryland. "Congress has never, because of weather, changed the time of an election."

  • Democrat Chat • Re: State Questions
    Oklahoma Observer: http://www.okobserver.net/2012/10/29/questions-answers/

The Observer urges Oklahoma voters to defeat five of the six proposed constitutional amendments on the general election ballot. — Only SQ 762 – which would remove the governor from the parole process involving non-violent offenders – is worthy of support. The others are either bad public policy or bald-faced power grabs by the state’s wealthy corporatists – or both.

SQ 758 is appealing, at first blush. It would lower from 5% to 3% the annual cap on property tax increases. Good news for those on fixed incomes or struggling to make ends meet, right?

Actually, it would put Oklahoma on the same slippery slope as California with its Prop 13 that has plunged the once-Golden State into fiscal chaos – a $16 billion budget deficit that is crippling vital state services.

It would be dangerous to further tie the hands of Oklahoma’s elected leaders. Thanks to SQ 640, it’s virtually impossible already to raise taxes, no matter how grave the emergency. SQ 758 would make matters much worse.

Among the casualties would be the state’s already underfunded public schools – it would cost $6.5 million the first year from a system already 49th in teacher salaries and 47th in student finding.

    Recommendation: No.

SQ 759 is a solution in search of a problem. It would ban something that doesn’t exist – affirmative action quotas in state employment, education and contracting. So why is this even on the ballot?

It is evidently the closest thing to a hot-button, social issue the Republican legislative majority could conjure this year, playing to the preposterous notion that white males are victims of rampant reverse discrimination.

Here’s the reality: Approving SQ 759 would send a terrible message to the rest of the nation – and the world – that Oklahoma doesn’t give a damn about equal opportunity.

Moreover, SQ 759 if approved would ban the one thing that is required of state agencies – a mandate to periodically report to the public how well they’re doing in hiring a workforce that reflects Oklahoma’s increasingly diverse population.

Call it Return of the Good Old Boy System.

    Recommendation: No.

SQ 762 would move the governor from the parole process when it comes to non-violent offenders.

Oklahoma is bankrupting itself thanks to a three-strikes mentality – more women incarcerated per capita than any other state, fourth per capita in men.

Taking the governor out of the parole process will speed the transition of non-violent offenders from expensive state incarceration – averaging $16,000-plus per inmate per year – to less expensive community-based supervision and treatment. The savings could be used to invest in underfunded vital state services such as education.

    Recommendation: Yes.

SQ 764 is another proposal that looks good at first, but doesn’t stand up to closer scrutiny. It would create a $300 million bonding authority under the Oklahoma Water Resources Board [OWRB] to help municipalities rebuild, update and expand water and wastewater infrastructure – an estimated $82 billion will be needed over the next 50 years.

The problem is, OWRB would control the money and the projects – which means the State Chamber and the Oklahoma City powers-that-be would be in charge.

Given how OWRB and OKC handled Sardis Lake, that’s more than disconcerting. It evokes fear of a slush fund for the privileged few, helping make the rich richer in Oklahoma City while leaving Oklahoma to wither.

    Recommendation: No.

SQ 765 would throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to the state Department of Human Services. It would eliminate the DHS commission and transfer its powers to the governor and the Legislature.

That’s hardly a comforting thought. The last thing DHS needs is to be politicized further. What it really needs is to be funded – fully. It never has been, leaving child welfare workers, for example, with crushing caseloads far beyond professional standards.

    Recommendation: No.

SQ 766 is a corporatist’s dream come true – a tax avoidance scheme that would make Mitt Romney proud.

The proposal would provide huge tax cuts to major business interests – think utilities, telecommunications companies, airlines and railroads – by exempting intangible property, including stocks, bonds and investments, from their net worth.

It would cost local governments an estimated $50 million annually – 60% of which goes to schools and roads, among other vital services.

    Recommendation: No.

“Governor Romney will win Oklahoma and I trust the results of the Sooner Poll when it comes to the Presidential preference in 2012 for those Oklahoma ‘likely voters’ over 45 years of age that are white. I think President Obama will surprise a lot of Oklahomans on election day. I believe that this excellent poll can only give a snapshot in time of where younger voters, African American voters and Latino voters are today and sadly too few of them are willing to be surveyed. By November 6th women, African Americans and Latinos especially in urban areas along with moderate Democrats will become more educated on the candidates and vote to re-elect President Obama. But, the seven electoral votes from Oklahoma will be cast for Governor Romney.” – Pat Hall, former State Democratic Party Chairman

Oklahomans’ attitudes and opinions on climate change can be as hard to interpret as an occluded front in March.
Only 8 percent of the 495 surveyed in the latest Oklahoma Poll think human activity is solely responsible for any change in the Earth’s climate.
